Classic Halo CE multiplayer comes to Campaign Evolved: the alpha

MJOLNIR Coremultiplayermapsalpha

Halo Campaign Evolved ships a campaign. It doesn't ship Blood Gulch.

Starting today it can. The MJOLNIR launcher installs all nineteen original Halo: Combat Evolved multiplayer maps, rebuilt to run inside Campaign Evolved, and a MULTIPLAYER menu to play them from with your fireteam. It's an alpha: it works, it has rough edges, and we want you to find them.

How to play

  1. Update the launcher to 0.9.0 (it offers the update itself). If you haven't set up mods yet, its My Mods page does that first. Then open the new Multiplayer page.
  2. Press Install multiplayer. The launcher downloads every map, the shared CE content they use, and the multiplayer mods, then registers the maps with your copy of the game. Press it again later to update.
  3. Start the game and choose MULTIPLAYER on the main menu. Pick a map and a game type, press INVITE FRIENDS to bring people into your fireteam, and START GAME.

Your friends need the same maps installed, so send them the launcher too.

What you get

  • Slayer and Capture the Flag on every map, with team scoring and the announcer.
  • The maps as they were. Each map keeps its own collision, so you walk where you walked in 2001: its spawns, its weapons and vehicles, its teleporters, health packs, grenades, overshields and active camo.
  • The look of 2001. CE's own textures, lightmaps and skies, its water rippling and reflecting the sky, and the base beacons pulsing as they did.
  • A multiplayer HUD. A kill feed that names the weapon, a respawn countdown, a scoreboard on Tab (the View button on a controller), and name tags over your teammates in team games, never over your enemies.
  • Screens of our own. The lobby and map select are new menus cooked into the game, not buttons painted over the campaign's.

How it works

Every map is converted from the original Halo CE map file into a new mission of its own. Its terrain, textures, lightmaps, sky and sounds become Unreal assets. Its collision becomes a Blam structure BSP the simulation walks on, and its spawns, weapons, vehicles and flags become objects the simulation places. Then it runs under the game's own multiplayer rules engine, the Megalo interpreter Campaign Evolved still carries from Halo: Reach. Slayer and CTF are Megalo game variants we write ourselves.

The one file that lists the maps for the game is built on your machine, from your own installed copy, every time a map is installed and again after a game update. Map packs are signed, and the launcher checks every signature and hash before anything lands in your game folder.

Known issues

  • Four players. Fireteams top out at four for now. Raising that is the next thing we're working on. Update: fixed in mods 0.10.0. Fireteams now take up to 16 players, each on their own PC.
  • The end of a game takes everyone back to the main menu. A post-game scoreboard and a vote for the next map are planned.
  • Finding games. There's no public game browser in the game yet. Invite friends through your fireteam. Live games will also show on mjolnircore.com/games as hosts start reporting them.
  • Game Pass. Built and tested on the Steam version. The Xbox app version should work the same way but hasn't been tested yet.
